Lumen ID’s Easyread™ Light Switch Labels can Help Senior’s Live Independently Longer Lumen ID’s new Easyread™ style features larger text that is easier to read for those who have vision impairment
Seattle, Washington, December 02, 2007 — Lumen ID, a Seattle Washington based architectural engraving company introduced Easyread™, a new large text option for their engraved light switch plates. Easyread™ features large ¼ inch high text. To accommodate the larger text size, the text is located vertically along the side of each light switch (in the same orientation as a title on a book spine). To be sure that there isn’t confusion about which switch label belongs to which switch, a thin border is engraved around the text to clearly associate it with the correct switch.
“We introduced this new style of engraving because sometimes our standard 1/8” text on our Simplicity™ style wallplates is not large enough. When the text is larger on switch plates, it becomes necessary to position the text vertically in order to fit an adequate number of characters. But in positioning the text vertically, we found it was difficult to tell whether the text was associated with the switch to the right or the switch to the left. When we added the thin borderline, it became much easier to associate the text with the correct switch,” says Nazim Nice, founder of Lumen ID.
“Through our research, we found that people either wanted their text small and inconspicuous, or large and easy to read. Generally, the people requesting the large text were older,” says Nice. The larger text on the Easyread™ switch plates works well in environments where larger text is needed, like nursing and retirement homes, independent living facilities, and other residences where the elderly live.
