Diversification Helps Small Architecture Firm Survive in Down Market Internet based business helps architecture firm owner reach out to a larger audience
Seattle, Washington, January 12, 2007 — After working for several architecture firms in Columbus Ohio, and Seattle Washington, and teaching at the Knowlton School of Architecture in Columbus, Nice decided to open his own architecture practice in his hometown of Seattle. Having worked in the architecture business for over 12 years and having lived through the dot.com bust, then 9/11, Nice knew the cyclical nature of the business and how revenues can decrease quickly in a down economy.
To help diversify his architecture practice, Nice looked to his other design related interests: graphic design, web design, and product design which he combined with an observation made by many of his clients over the years: since today’s buildings have become more complicated, many times clients and users of buildings had difficulty remembering what all their light switches operated. Nice questioned why there was not a better way of labeling switches without resorting to stick-on labels, tape, or a permanent marker. After many months of research, Nice identified equipment that could produce engraved switch plates and started developing a web-based ordering system for the complex variety of switch plates available.
“As with many architects in Seattle, we really felt a big hit when the banks started failing in October of 2008, especially locally based Washington Mutual. While fewer people were willing to start large construction projects and outlay large sums of money, we quickly learned that didn’t seem to affect smaller purchases,” says Nice.
Today, Lumen ID helps contribute to the bottom line. And the website has even brought in orders from other companies, including a large national lighting manufacturer looking for custom engraved light switch plates for their new lighting system targeted for schools and universities.
