Technology Offers new Opportunity for Small Business to Produce Customized Products at Reasonable Cost Lumen ID uses laser technology and the internet to sell custom engraved light switch plates nationwide
Seattle, Washington, January 04, 2007 — Seattle architect, Nazim Nice, brainstormed about alternative revenue streams that would appeal to a lot of people and be able to be sold nationwide. He came up with a product after observing that many of his own clients had difficulty remembering what all the light switches in their home or business operated. Since ever building is different, Nice began researching how to produce and sell a custom product.
To make the concept work, Nice needed two things: 1) a way to reach a large audience and 2) a means to efficiently produce a custom product. “To make this work, we knew we needed to reach out to a larger audience than just the Seattle market. The internet makes it possible to offer our products to anyone in the US, Canada or beyond,” says Nazim Nice, founder of Lumen ID.
To efficiently produce the product, Nice researched various labeling and engraving equipment and eventually identified laser engravers as the best solution to produce the product. “We spent a lot of time researching various laser manufacturers and testing out each to see which produced the best product. We met with local product reps, and talked to people who ran their own engraving businesses. What we learned is that they spend a lot of time on set-up since each job is different, and therefore have to charge high prices for their customized products. We asked ourselves, what if we produce our products with minimal setup to keep the price reasonable? Since our products are made from premade templates, setup is minimal and our products can be produced in an efficient manner,” says Nice.
The other hurdle to overcome was to create an online ordering system that made ordering the product easy, even though there are over 650 switch plate choices. “We didn’t want the user to get lost in the ordering process, which could happen very easily with the number of products we offer. Yet we also didn’t want to limit the number of switch plates we offer to just a few,” says Nice. The website features all the information needed to place an order, including an extensive gallery of products displaying examples of the different engraving styles and fonts available. The website also features examples of every paint fill combination, so there is no guessing what your color combinations will look like.
